A round convex wall mirror, typically used in a cabinet of curiosities, with a repoussé brass frame alternating with smooth surfaces. These convex mirrors were called “witches’ mirrors” because they were believed to have magical powers, such as visually confusing witches when brought into a home. Indeed, when placed in front of a window or door, they would project light into the home. Italy, mid-19th century.
