Large convex mirror with a round frame. These convex mirrors were called “witches’ mirrors” because they were believed to possess magical powers, such as visually confusing witches when brought into a home. In fact, when placed in front of a window or door, they projected light into the home. Mounted in a carved, round frame made of blue lacquered wood. The back, also turned, features a small cast bronze rosette in the center. An iron hook is attached to the top of the mirror. Italy, circa 1870
