Anatomical teaching model, the prenatal fetus at the fifth month of development. Somso, Germany, 1950s.
Germany, circa 1950.
2200 EURO
Anatomical model for educational use. The model depicts a supine fetus in the fifth month of pregnancy, lying horizontally on its back. The circular base, with a wavy profile, ends in a flat circle at the top. It is made of turned maple wood and finished with a green paint that emulates a continuous hammered texture. The chrome-plated metal support fork is screwed into the center, secured by a nut and locknut at the bottom of the base. The tubular element rises to open into a U-shape and support the model. It is made of SOMSO-Plast, a polyvinyl resin patented by Marcus Sommers SOMSO Modelle GmbH in the 1930s for the production of high-precision anatomical, zoological, and botanical educational models. Hand-finished in color. The fetus is removable. The label “MS 12 / 6 five-month’s embryo (lying on the back)” and the SOMSO trademark are applied to the base. The company was founded in 1876 by Marcus Sommers Sr. in Sonnenberg, Thuringia. Germany, 1950s.
