Art Nouveau silver walking stick with dragon, signed Eugène Lefebvre, France 1900.

Paris, France 1900.

8200 EURO

A beautifully carved Art Nouveau silver cane knob depicting a dragon-lizard among flowers. The carving is extremely realistic, right down to the reptile’s prehensile claws and finely delineated scales. Rendered in exceptionally detailed high relief, its textures and shading are detailed. The reptile’s eye is set with a small cabochon ruby. The flower pistils are cabochon opals. The shaft is made of ebony wood and the tip is made of brass and iron. Designed and crafted by master silversmith Eugène Lefebvre. Eugène Lefebvre was part of a family of Parisian artisans whose business was started by 19th-century watchmaker François Lefebvre. François’s eldest son, Eugène (not our Eugène), took over the company and began producing jewelry, winning the gold medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. Eugène’s sons, Charles and Eugène (ours), joined the business in the 1880s. Eugène fils was a highly regarded designer during his career, which, according to his trademark registration, ran from 1896 to 1910. Paris, France circa 1900.
