Italy second half of 19th century

5900 EURO

A pair of Wunderkammer mirrors with black ebonized wood frames, round in shape, featuring a lumachella stone plate and faceted Berlin iron trim. At the top of the mirror is a gilded bronze hook for wall mounting, featuring ribbons and an eyelet.
These convex mirrors were called “witches’ mirrors” because they were believed to have magical powers, such as visually confusing witches when brought into the home. Indeed, when placed in front of a window or door, they projected light into the home. Italy, second half of the 19th century.
