Berlin Germany circa 1880.

3500 EURO

A rare Brendel botanical model, Salvia officinalis no. 111 (common sage flower, Salbei, blue sage, Sauge officinale). It depicts a sage flower enlarged approximately 15 times its actual size. Handcrafted from papier-mâché, wood, cotton, and other materials, it is hand-painted. The model is composed of several removable parts (often held together by hooks or pins) to allow students to observe the flower’s internal anatomy and reproductive organs in detail. The round, ebonized wooden base supports the botanical model, revealing the sage flower. Robert and Reinhold Brendel Manufactory. Berlin, Germany, late 19th century.
