A pair of octagonal mirrors in lacquered cypress wood and semiprecious stones, Italy, second half of the 19th century.

Italy second half of 19th century.

8500 Euro 4.250 EURO cad.

A pair of Wunderkammer mirrors with black lacquered cypress frames, octagonal in shape, with gilded trim and set with cabochon-cut semiprecious stones: lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, amethyst, epidote stone, rock crystal, agate, jade, and agate. The passepartout is made of turned walnut, with a double row of bronze beads. At the top of the mirror is a gilded bronze hook for wall mounting, depicting the face of a cherub, surmounted by ribbons and an eyelet. These convex mirrors were called “witches’ mirrors” because they were believed to have magical powers, such as visually confusing witches when brought into the home. Indeed, when placed in front of a window or door, they would project light into the home. Italy, second half of the 19th century.
