A heroic, life-size mask depicting the portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven, freshly modeled in terracotta with a slat finish. Signed and dated A. Galli 1922. The “grid,” painted in the same color as the signature, is a sign of the artist’s cataloguing (third in the series).
Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Beethoven myth was extremely popular among sculptors (think of Max Klinger’s famous monument).
Angelo Galli (Viggiù, Varese, 1870, Milan 1933) was an Italian sculptor active between the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. He was part of a renowned family of sculptors. He participated in numerous art exhibitions.
