Art Nouveau walking stick. The knob is made of finely carved boxwood, depicting a representation of Ceres (Demeter for the Greeks), the Roman Goddess of cereals, crops and the fertility of nature. Her face is enclosed in armour. Ceres was also the protector of laws and courts. Ebonized fruit wood wood shaft, bovine horn ferrule. Silver band, signed Gemito. Vincenzo Gemito (1852-1929), winner of a gold medal at the Naples Exposition of 1877. Most of his work resides in the Galleries of Modern Art of Rome and Turin, in the Bargello museum in Florence and in international museums: d’Orsay, Getty, Prado and Metropolitan. Italy circa 1900.
