Bronze sculpture of a dog. The base, with its wavy profile, is engraved with decorative motifs. The sculpture depicts a hunting dog, specifically an Italian Greyhound, the smallest of the sighthounds and one of the oldest dog breeds, well documented in archaeological finds and literary sources from the Roman Empire. Greyhounds were synonymous with aristocracy, elegance, and loyalty, making them perfect subjects for decorative desk or mantelpiece pieces. Bred both as a hunting dog and as a companion, its specialty was pheasant and hare hunting. The base is made of bronze. France, circa 1880.
