Brooch in 925/1000 sterling silver, gilded with glass paste, signed Nettie Rosenstein. Nettie Rosenstein (1880–1980) was one of the most important American haute couture and jewelry designers of the 20th century, with an atelier in New York. Born Nettie Rosenscrans in Salzburg, Austria-Hungary, she immigrated to America in the 1890s, in Harlem, New York. Her brooches are highly sought after by collectors today. The large, dynamic, floral brooches with sweeping curves are typical of her work from the 1940s and 1950s. A distinctive feature is the use of a central moonstone-like glass paste cabochon. Signed on a rectangular cartouche “Nettie Rosenstein” and marked “sterling,” 925/1000 silver. USA, circa 1950.
