Ivory handle walking stick, Japan 1890.
Japan 1890
SOLD
Walking stick with light rattan shaft and ivory pommel. The knob, spherical, depicts the famous Japanese statuette of “I see no, hear no, speak no” sometimes divided into three monkeys: “Mizaru”, “monkey that sees no evil”, “Kikazaru”, “monkey that does not hears evil” and “Iwazaru”, “monkey who does not speak of evil”. It is not uncommon to associate the expression “I don’t see, I don’t hear, I don’t speak” to a situation in which something is deliberately ignored or avoided talking about it. Japan, c.1890.
