A portable pocket sextant for military field, topographic, and naval use (known as a Pocket Sextant or brass Box Sextant). Signed “STANLEY LONDON”, the renowned company founded by William Ford Stanley in 1853, a world leader in the manufacture of high-precision mathematical and surveying instruments. The arrow engraved above the maker’s name is the British War Office Broad Arrow, indicating government ownership and military issue to the United Kingdom’s armed forces (Army or Royal Navy). The instrument features a vernier mechanism: a silvered graduated scale with a vernier for highly precise angular readings, equipped with an adjustable magnifying glass for easier reading. The brass bottom cover unscrews and screws onto the opposite end to serve as a handle during field operation. Inside are angled mirrors that allow the measurement of angles between two objects.
