A pair of bookends. The two Pekingese dogs are depicted in a playful, pleading pose (on their hind legs). In the early decades of the 20th century, the Pekingese was one of the most fashionable and exotic dog breeds among the European bourgeoisie, often associated with luxury and oriental-inspired taste. They are made of white cast metal with an enamel finish. The supporting structure (the base and back) features a characteristic “orange peel” or hammered texture on the back, typical of metal castings of the period, finished with a dark, glossy enamel. An example of the Animalier movement of the late 19th and early 20th century in France.
